We have learned that in order to give ourselves fully to the work of the LORD, it is necessary to take care of ourselves well. As Parker Palmer puts it, “Self-care is never a selfish act - it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer others. Anytime we can listen to our true self and give the care it requires, we do it not only for ourselves, but for the many others whose lives we touch.”
We’ve experienced overwork and burnout, and learned how difficult it is to recover from burnout. Many of us worked on Sabbath and felt tired and weary throughout the week. Though there will always be overwhelming needs around us, as we work with our neighbors, we need to prioritize self-care.
Caring for ourselves means not overworking, taking adequate rest, exercising regularly and investing in hobbies and relationships outside work. We believe that when we are able to care for ourselves well, it allows us to bless our friends and neighbors with joy and sustainability.
